I need to have another difficult conversation, especially for my police officers out there. I realize you're struggling with retention and job satisfaction. There are record numbers of police leaving their posts in certain jurisdictions in New York State. I know socially, you guys have a tough time—it's developed into a sense of 'us versus them,' and you feel the media and certain political parties are against you, your hands are tied, and your job is impossible. And you're not entirely wrong to feel that way. But there's another side to consider. There's a reason why many people have a natural distrust of the police. It's due to a large number of on-duty police officers who carry this scarred little boy energy. And this manifests in many ways—police officers statistically have the most tumultuous marriages, very high levels of infidelity, domestic violence, and so on. It's also why some percentage of your interactions with the public go sideways the moment your ego is bruised or you don't get unyielding compliance. There's a reason for all of this, and I really hope you can have a come-to-Jesus moment. There is bliss and clarity you can only get when you serve something bigger than you. Not only for yourselves, but for the sake of the country. Because you are needed. But you also have a responsibility to look in the mirror, take accountability for the role you're playing, and address some of the men in your ranks who contribute to the current sentiment and situation.
