Writing checks is easy. Showing up and actually helping is harder. I like the idea of helping would-be entrepreneurs, but not as a philanthropist. That's too distant for me. I'd rather sit down with someone and walk through what they're struggling with. Show them how I handled something similar. Share what worked and what blew up in my face. In my experience, you’re able to do a lot more good when you have the opportunity to be hands-on with the business owner (and not in a micromanaging way). When you mentor someone through a real problem, you're both learning something. That's the kind of help that actually matters.
