@Arkypatriot No, never. I can’t imagine any situation where that kind of question from non-family OR even an in-law would be appropriate. I’d much rather have the remaining relatives say, “I had no idea that our niece wanted Gram’s teacup. It’s already gone.” There’s no good way to ask.
