Modern kids spend too little time together outside of organized sports or activities, and it’s doing them a disservice. Today, I watched my son get frustrated trying to learn an ollie on his skateboard after just 10 minutes. He was alone, with only me to encourage him, no peers to share the struggle. Mastering an ollie takes time and persistence, something you don’t figure out in one go. When I was a kid, we spent hours, days, and entire summers together, often without plans or close supervision. We tested limits, pushed each other, and learned from our successes and failures. Sure, we got hurt or into mischief sometimes, but we developed resilience and problem-solving skills through it all. I worry my kids are missing out on this kind of growth.
