So I have a wild idea…. What if the poker community crowdfunded enough money to produce a documentary of its own. No ties to any specific poker brand to help avoid the politics. The community could then have some creative control by helping vote on the players they want to see the documentary follow. Ideally- I think 4 players with relatively different career tier levels (low stakes, mid stakes, high stakes, super high roller) but this can also be discussed among the creative team for what makes the most sense. The players featured would have the freedom to play the series they want while it’s all documented- this means we could possibly see multiple different series featured because it’s based on the player, not the brand or sponsor producing the film. This gives power back to the players and us as viewers since we’re the ones who are deciding who the featured players are. I also think one important component is filming 24/7 (I think this is where game of gold lacked tbh because how funny would it have been to see Negreanu and Arieh not allowed in a night club for being TOO OLD lol but instead we only heard about it on Twitter.) In general, I would’ve liked to see more of what happened after the challenges at the end of the day when they all went back to the hotel. We need to see what happens off the felt significantly more than on the felt to appeal to a wide audience. Less scripted dinners and fake produced conversations. I think film crew should basically blend in with the background so much that the players don’t even notice them and can be themselves and speak freely. I also think all featured players should get to see the final copy and give consent on publishing it before it goes live (this is standard in the industry and I’m honestly shocked the WSOP doc wasn’t shown to players beforehand for consent). Anyways there’s my idea(s). Would love to hear feedback or other ideas. Let’s brainstorm together.
